BERN, SWITZERLAND(SMI-GLOBAL-WOMEN-SPORTS-JULY 02-27, 2025)-FIFA ranked #2, Spain Women's national team defeated Switzerland 2-0, in the quarterfinal match, advances to the semifinals of the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro 2025 soccer tournament at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, Switzerland.

The Spaniards who won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023, outperformed the Swiss in the game-stats with an impressive 73% to 27% in possession, 23-4, shots at goal and 6-0, shots on target to defeat the host 2-1, and advance to semifinals rounds of the tournament.

The spaniards went to the attack immediately in the first few  minute of the game and on its first major offensive attack, midfielder Mariona Caldentey  on a fast-break through the right-side field evaded a defender and was brought-down inside the 18, by 
Swiss' defender Nadine Riesen for a penalty call in favor of Spain at 7' mark.

The penalty kick was executed by midfielder Marion Caldeney but missed wide toward the left-side goalpost for the game remain scoreless.

Spain kept the pressure and 10' later, forward Claudia Pina almost found the back of the net when she shot a right-footed canon towards goal but it was saved and parried away back onto the field by goalkeeper Livia Peng. 

With 3' left in the half, striker Claudia Pina sent a corner-kick inside the 18' finding defender Irene Paredes who almost scored with a header but it bounced-off the right-goal post to send both teams scoreless to the locker-rooms at the half. 


In the second half, the Spaniards picked-up where they left-off and during a corner kick Claudia Pina sent a center inside the penalty box, finding midfielder Patri Guijarro
who with a header hit the right-goal post back onto the field to remain the game scoreless at 60' mark.  

Five-minute into the half, Spain were all over the Swiss, controlling the ball and during a counter-attack through the left-side field and a loose ball, midfielder Patricia Guijarro passed the ball to Aitana Bonmati who was standing on the 18' line, backed-heal pass inside the penalty box to striker Athenea del Castillo who came from the bench 5' prior and scored with a lower-right footed to the right-goal post to put Spain 1-0, over Switzerland at  66" mark. 

The Spaniards were looking for more goals to secure the victory and they found it 4' minute later, when a long ball from back-down field reaches the defensive line of the Swiss team and midfielder failed to clear the ball, striker Claudia Pina stole the ball and shot a right-footed beautiful canon towards the upper-right corner ending in back of the net for the 2-0, at 71' and secure the win for Spain over Switzerland.  


With the game-clock winding down, Spain had the chance to score its third goal when striker Athenea del Castillo on a fast-break through the left-side field was fouled inside the 18' by forward Iman Beney for penalty call at 86' mark. Midfielder Alexia Putellas kicked the peanlty shot but missed when Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng saved and parried the ball away onto the field for a sensational save.

With the win, the Spaniards advance to the semifinals and face Germany who defeated France 6-5, in penalty shoot-out in the other quarterfinal match on Wednesday July 23, at  
Stadion Letzigrund, in Zurich, Switzerland.
