ZURICH, SWITZERLAND(SMI-GLOBAL-WOMEN-SPORTS-JULY 02-27, 2025)-FIFA ranked #2, and FIFA World Cup reigning champion "Spain" defeated #3, Germany 1-0, in extra-time with an epic ending in the semifinal match of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 soccer tournament, advance to the final championship game for the fist time to face England next Sunday at St. Jakob-Park, in Basel, Switzerland.
The Spaniards who reached the semifinal rounds after finishing first and undefeated with 9-points in Group B, and knock-out host Switzerland 2-0, in quarterfinal, outperformed Germany in the game-stats with an impressive 67% to 33% in possession, 22-15, shots at goal and 9-4, shots on target to defeat the Germans 1-0, and advance to final championship title game.
Germany went to the attack from the start, and on its first major offensive attack, goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger sent a long goal-kick from downfield to forward Klara Bühl who on a fast-break with two-defender at each-side, ran inside 18' and shot a wide left-footed narrowly missing the far right-goal post for a goal-kick at 7' mark.
Ten-minute later, Spain answered-back with a counter-attack on their on their own through the left-side field, defender Olga Carmona on a fast-break centered the ball inside the penalty box touching German's Franziska Kett for a loose ball to Striker Esther Gonzales who shot a right-footed to goal but it was deflected out-of-bounce over the crossbar by goalkeeper Berger for a corner kick at 21' mark.
With five-minute left into the half, Spain kept the pressure and had two opportunities to go ahead in the score when midfielder Aitama Bonmati centered a corner-kick inside the 18', finding Irene Paredes who with a header towards goal bounced-off the goalpost onto the field at 41' mark, and midfielder Patricia Guijarro sent a long ball from back down field to striker Esther who from inside the penalty box shot a left-footed to goal but it was saved by goalkeeper Berger for a scoreless draw at the half.
In the second half, the Spaniards picked-up where they left-off with continuous counter-attack without any major danger for most of the entire second half.
With 5' remaining into the game, German's forward Klara Buhl shot a direct-kick from 25-yards away narrowly missing the right-goal post to remain the game scoreless at 85' mark.
In the final play of the game and in stoppage time, German's forward Selina Cerci through the left-side field and on a fast break passed the ball to Klara Buhl who shot a right-footed to goal deflected-off defender Maria Mendez's foot that almost ended in
back of the net but goalkeeper Cata Coll parried the ball away from the goal-line and on the rebound German's forward Carlotta Wamser shot a right-footed canon to goal but miraculously was saved and deflected out-of-bounce off Cole's leg for a corner kick.
With 7' minute remaining in Extra-time of the 2-period, German's midfielder Sydney Lohmann failed to clear the ball long enough, and was intercepted by forward Athenea del Castillo who immediately rolled a pass inside the box to Aitana Bonmati who shot
a low right-footed missile between goalkeeper Berger and the right-goalpost that ended in back of the net for winning goal at 112+ and secure the 1-0, victory for Spain over Germany.
With the win, Spain advance to the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 championship final game for the first time in country history, and will face the defending champions England next Sunday July 27, 12:00pm at St. Jakob-Park, Basel, Switzerland.
